Princess Diana made fashion history during her lifetime. She loved experimenting with style and was in many ways ahead of her time.
Princess Diana's journey from the mousy and touching Lady Di to the seductive and internationally recognized fashion icon was thorny and memorable. Even so many years after her death, she remains a role model.
She ruled fashion back in the 1980s and 1990s. Her simplicity in clothing, which was initially met with hostility in British high society and was called an ordinary style, gradually turned into what is today considered a sign of the impeccable taste of the “queen of human hearts.” Lady Di looked amazing in both baggy jeans and couture dresses. And in general, she became not only the first woman in the history of the royal family to wear trousers to an evening event, but also wore everything that was strictly prohibited for royalty at all times.
At first, the beautiful Spencer was indeed a modest and rather naive young girl. She seemed the ideal bride for the heir to the British throne. And only after the wedding the royal family realized that they would still have to be nervous. The princess began to violate royal protocol so often that no one had any doubts that she was doing this on purpose. Such antics of the Princess of Wales seemed bold and funny to everyone except the royal family.
The paparazzi and editors of the British press truly adored Diana. And not only because it gave them a reason for new articles. Ordinary people were fascinated by her way of dressing. At times, Charles’s wife allowed herself quite original stylistic decisions that did not go unnoticed.
Recently, the late princess's former hairdresser, who often worked on her beauty looks, revealed some secrets that no one had previously guessed. Richard Dalton told the real reason for Diana's fashionable non-standard decisions.
This is what happened at the gala banquet in 1985. The rules for wearing jewelry were clearly stated, but this did not bother Diana. The princess appeared at the event wearing an emerald necklace on her head that looked like a headband. This example of her unrivaled approach to style is still praised by many to this day. But, as it turned out, the hairdresser, who had worked with her for almost 10 years, simply had no choice.
The fact is that shortly before this, during the royal tour, the princess received a sunburn on her neck and could not wear the necklace. Then Dalton suggested making it a head accessory. And in order to fix the necklace in his hair, he borrowed from the princess’s costume designer, Evelyn, a small piece of ordinary elastic, which is used for sewing clothes or underwear.
This luxurious diamond and emerald necklace was created for Queen Mary using stones that once belonged to Queen Victoria. After her death, she left the jewelry to Queen Elizabeth II, who gave it to Diana as a wedding gift. By the way, for the first time in several decades, this necklace was seen again in December 2022 on Kate Middleton during the Earthshot Awards ceremony.
Then Diana used this technique more than once, making it a fashion trend. And Dalton has since begun to more often offer the princess non-standard hairstyles. For example, during a 1988 tour of Southeast Asia, a hairdresser wove live orchids into his hair, which he borrowed from vases in the hotel. Diana appreciated this again.
And Lady Di’s beauty master once helped her outwit everyone around her. The princess wanted a short haircut, but not to get into new scandalous media headlines. Then they decided to cut their hair every day by only 2 centimeters, so that no one would notice a radical change in image. And they did it!
