The latest Windows 11 update breaks the taskbar on computers

A bug can manifest itself in different ways.

The May update for Windows 11, numbered KB5037853, disables the taskbar for some users. It also refuses to install on ARM MacBooks. Microsoft has recognized these problems and is already addressing them.

Interestingly, the bug manifests itself in different ways. For some, the taskbar freezes or stops responding to clicks, while for others, application icons disappear from it. The same error prevents you from switching Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and performing other quick actions. Restarting explorer.exe in the task manager has been reported to help in some cases.

Microsoft recommended not installing KB5037853 for now. In the near future, the company promises to release an emergency patch to fix bugs for those who have already downloaded it. In the meantime, you can remove the update from the system yourself:

  1. Open Settings and click Windows Update.
  2. Select View Update History and click Remove Updates.
  3. Find "KB5037853" in the list.
  4. Click "Uninstall" next to the update.
  5. Restart your computer.

KB5037853 was released to fix critical bugs and add several new features, including the ability to drag and drop files into the File Explorer address bar.
