The American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) was created in September 1985, when it received one of its first donations of $250,000 from actor Rock Hudson - shortly before he died of AIDS in October 1985. Since then, amfAR has invested nearly $617 million in its programs and awarded more than 3,500 grants to research groups around the world.
