Copenhagen: a city you want to return to

Colorful houses, fabulous pedestrian streets, green parks and cozy restaurants and cafes... Every minute of your stay in the capital of Denmark brings joy and makes you smile.

Getting to know the city

Copenhagen is very hospitable: here you can find accommodation to suit every taste and budget. If possible, it is better to stay in the historical center to fully experience the unique atmosphere of the city. One of the best accommodation options is the new boutique hotel SP34, which opened in April 2014. It is located in the ancient Latin Quarter, surrounded by vintage shops, cozy restaurants and bars. Just 300 meters from the hotel is the huge Town Hall Square - one of the most popular places in the city - and the City Hall itself, the façade of which is painted with scenes from Scandinavian mythology.

From here you can go for a walk towards the New Royal Square along the longest pedestrian street in Europe, Stroget (“Promenade”).

Stroget is a special world where life is in full swing 24 hours a day. In fact, these are several streets flowing into one another, on which there are many restaurants, cafes, shops, souvenir and jewelry shops.

A walk through this place is not only a wonderful shopping experience, but also a mini-excursion into the history of the country. Your path will pass by the famous University of Copenhagen, many medieval churches, squares and ancient houses.

What if you have limited time but still want to see the most of what Copenhagen has to offer? The ideal solution is to go on a boat excursion, which is incredibly popular among tourists. Just take a seat on the boat, put on headphones with an audio guide in Russian (rental is included in the ticket price) and enjoy the beautiful views: the Nyhavn waterfront (you will immediately recognize the bright houses from postcards), the old stock exchange building with three dragons on the roof, and, of course , the symbol of the city is the bronze Little Mermaid.

Just remember the main rule of all those traveling along the canals of Copenhagen: do not stand up during the excursion! Most bridges are very low and it is safer to swim under them while sitting.

Gourmet paradise

Copenhagen is a true paradise for foodies. If you want to try traditional Danish cuisine, head to Slotkælderen hos Gitte Kik. They serve the best Smørrebreds in town - open-faced sandwiches filled with herring, shrimp, eggs and more. By the way, the Danish Parliament is located next door, so on weekdays you can meet Danish politicians in this restaurant.

For those who want to get acquainted with modern Scandinavian cuisine, the direct route is to Royal Smushi Cafe, which is located in the heart of Copenhagen.

The walls of the restaurant are decorated with portraits and paintings depicting various humorous situations from the life of ordinary people. We recommend trying smushi - a traditional Danish open sandwich, similar in size and shape to sushi.

Bicycle rides

To move around Copenhagen freely, you don’t need to order a taxi every time. After all, you are in the “green” capital of Europe! If you want to feel like a local, feel free to ride a bike. There are a huge number of bike rentals in the city, where you can rent a two-wheeled friend equipped with a basket for things. Just stay on the right side of the bike path, as the driving style of local cyclists is quite aggressive. By the way, in Copenhagen, young and fashionable Danish women use bicycles as their main means of transportation, so in a dress and low-heeled shoes, next to this eco-friendly form of transport, you will definitely pass for a local resident.

In the very center of Copenhagen there is a magical place where you can get lost for the whole day... Of course, we are talking about Tivoli Park, founded back in 1843. This is an incredibly charming vintage park, where there are attractions made in the form of a sultan’s palace or a Chinese pagoda, cafes and restaurants surrounded by greenery, flower beds with unusual flowers, a summer theater and a stage where famous artists perform.

They say that Walt Disney came up with his legendary parks while walking through Tivoli. It’s easy to believe, especially at the moment when dusk falls and thousands of colorful lights light up, turning the Tivoli into a magic box.

Fairytale Kingdom

Being in Copenhagen, you feel as if you are in a fairy tale kingdom come to life. And it’s not surprising, because in the capital of Denmark there is Rosenborg Castle - not far from the city center, on the territory of the Royal Garden. The pink palace with a copper roof is surrounded by moats, and next to it there is a magnificent rose garden.

Of course, Copenhagen does not live solely in the past. The appearance of the 900-year-old city is constantly being updated. For example, the ancient royal library acquired a new wing, called the “Black Diamond”. This unique structure is made of polished granite, specially brought from Zimbabwe.

The former red light district of Vesterbro has also been completely rebuilt. It is now a modern, cosmopolitan area and trendy party spot, known for its bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

And the island of Holmen, where old warehouses used to be located, now boasts the grandiose and majestic building of the Copenhagen Opera House.

In short, one can talk and write endlessly about Copenhagen and its riches. It's so easy to fall in love with this city at first sight! Majestic cathedrals and temples, parks with amazing plants, picturesque harbors and streets perfect for walking... This city captivates at first sight and stays with you forever.
