When hiking, it is important not to miss the moment when the sun sets. This can be monitored using various apps or timers, but the smartphone battery may suddenly run out. For such cases, there is a very simple way to calculate the time until sunset, for which you only need your hands.

Turn your face to the Sun and extend your hand with your palm facing you, and place your fingers parallel to the horizon. The index finger should be slightly below the sun, and the little finger should be parallel to the edge of the horizon.

Count how many fingers you need to visually connect the horizon and the sun. Each one takes 15 minutes, and a whole hand takes about one hour. If there is still space left under your little finger to reach the horizon, use the fingers of your other hand and continue counting.

Please note that the calculation may vary depending on the geographical location. For example, in the tropics it gets dark faster because the sun sets at a right angle, while in the north it’s the other way around. In addition, you need to take into account the terrain: mountains and trees in the forest can interfere with the penetration of sunlight.
